This process uses a synthetic thin film polymeric membrane to filter out PFAS, achieving up to 99% removal efficiency [according to the EPA.](https://www.epa.gov/system/files/documents/2021-09/multi-industry-pfas-study_preliminary-2021-report_508_2021.09.08.pdf) However, RO treatment generates a residual PFAS waste in the form of reject brine, constituting 20-30% of the treated water.
